My poor, long suffering mother
Mom: I am going to get ready to go out to dinner now–we are celebrating our 9th anniversary how weird is that?
me: why is that weird?
Mom: I am just amazed at how much time has gone by in the blink of an eye 9 whole years… I am bemused
me: congratulations, anyway
Mom: thanks. we went to a paint your own pottery place in west chester this afternoon and made a commemorative platter–it was Bill’s idea. I think it will be really nice and we will hang it on the wall
me: awww
Mom: yeah. next we are making ice cream bowls. One will say “Bill loves Kate” and the other will say “Kate loves BIll” after that we will make another one when you and or Jeanne get married: “Bill and Kate love x & Y” and then we can continue it for each grandchild. I love this idea, making our own fun
me: this is quite the plan. so… what if manfriend and i never get married? would children born out of wedlock not get any bowls? would that screw up the entire bowl continuum?
Mom: if you don’t get married but remain in a committed relationship with children, you’d get a bowl–but there would have to be a commitment. children are a commitment. Alternatively, we could make a bowl for you and a bowl for michael
me: that’s ominous
Mom: right. I like the couple’s bowls.
me: what if we bought a house together, would we get a bowl then?
k8lowe: hmmm, it’s a commitment
me: it sounds like a conundrum.
Mom: and an occasion–we were thinking of honoring occaisions
me: michael and i aren’t really the party types
Mom: an occaision is not a party. it’s just that modern life has few ceremonies to honor significant events
me: well, we downplay occasions, too. being the modern people that we are
Mom: we wanted a way to honor a significant event
me: with bowls.
Mom: and ice cream, there’s always room for ice cream
me: we don’t really eat ice cream though. they’d work for cereal, though, right?
Mom: home made ice cream, ceral, soup, spagetti
me: like, it wouldn’t be offensive if we ate cereal out of our commemorative ice cream bowls?
Mom: sherbet, sorbet
me: so really, ice cream is just a suggestion
