In the dark, he whispered, “I love you”

We are such bums. When I got home from work last night, the boyfriend was lying on the couch, in front of the fan. We couldn’t decide what to eat for dinner, so we ate a small, deeply unsatisfying meal. We lazed about for a few hours, then decided to go for a walk. We walked to rite aid to pick up something for our tub drain to catch all the funky debris we shed while bathing that are apparently clogging up our pipes. By which I mean hair – my hair. I really don’t think I lose that much hair, and today the little drain strainer is vindicating me. I digress.
We stepped out of rite aid with our small, vindicating plumbing purchase, and the boyfriend gripped his stomach painfully.
“I want a little something to eat.” he whispered.
“Like what?”
“I don’t know.” he shut his eyes and winced.
“We’re going to die of starvation sometime because we can’t figure out what to feed ourselves.”
“Probably,” he agreed.
“We-ell, there’s thai food, chinese,” I pointed in the various directions of the food as I listed them off, “wawa -”
“Oh, wawa, I could go there and get a little one-foot long sandwich. Like a hoagie. With meats and cheese.”
“- or McDonald’s.”
“McDonald’s. Let’s go.”
So we went. Later, in the dark, he whispered, “I love you.”
“Why?”
“Because you give me your fries.”
